The Commanders looked to build on their momentum from last season with the first step being the draft as they look to put talent around Jayden Daniels, and Dominique Hampton on their respective sides of the ball.
In the first round they would end up drafting LOLB/DE Abdul Carter he even wore the iconic #11 that many Penn State legends have wore before him. This season for the Nittany Lions Carter had 37 tackles 10 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. He looks to be a nice piece to add to the pass rush with the old veteran Khalil Mack, Daron Payne and Jamin Davis. Carter said after being drafted “Can’t wait to work with one of the best in Khalil and get to the Quarterback this season” Then in the second round they would have two picks one via the trade they made with the Raiders to give them Jonathan Allen. With the first pick they had in the second round they would take HB Ollie Gordon II who didn’t reach 1000 yards this season with Oklahoma State but the season before had 1,732 yards so he is looking to bounce back with Washington and he will most likely get that chance he may split a little bit of time with Brian Robinson Jr but Gordon is the better hybrid back as we see more in the NFL these days so expect him to get the job in the long run. “ Can’t wait to work glad to be a commander baby let’s get it” This is what he said after his first conference as a Commander. With their second pick in the Second round the Commanders would take SS Andrew Mukuba the speedy safety from Texas who is from Zimbabwe look for him to take a lot of snaps at Saftey with Jeremy chinn getting time as well. Mukuba had 52 total tackles this season and 4 INT with a couple pass breakups added in as well. “We gon make sure we lock down the skies in Washington cause I’m here now”. In the third round they would make another move to cover the skies as they would pick CB Fentrell Cypress II out of Florida State. He fits Saban’s defensive scheme well as he is strong in zone. “I’m glad i get to go to Coach Jalen the Kid and Saban when I visited I knew i wanted to be here”. Then in the fourth they would pick up a weapon for JD 5 in WR Keandre Lambert-Smith from Auburn this season for the Tigers he would have 50 receptions for 981 yards. expect him to be a instrumental part of the Commanders passing attack with Terry Mclaurin, Luke Mccaffery and Ben Sinnott. Lambert-Smith should be what the Commanders need as deep threat but can also be a run after catch guy with his speed. It will be interesting to see how JTK’s offense and JD 5 utilize him. Then in the 5th and 6th rounds the Commanders would upgrade the defense as they would pick up Wisconsin saftey Hunter Wohler he most likely won’t start this year with Quan Martin being the starter but expect him to be in on some packages to get him some reps and experience at the safety position. Then there’s the sixth rounder MLB Kobe King who will be an instrumental part in the LB room as he joins Dominque Hampton in the middle and he is versatile can play zone can cover a TE it is just a matter of if he can do it at the next level. Next thing to see is how these rookies respond to the league as the season plays out.
