ATLANTA — In a headline-grabbing move, the Atlanta Falcons have reportedly appointed Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed as head coach for the 2025–26 NFL season. A former standout at the University of Miami and NFL legend with the Baltimore Ravens, Reed brings unparalleled defensive pedigree to the Falcons.

Reed, selected 24th overall in the 2002 NFL Draft, starred at Miami—winning a national championship in 2001 and earning unanimous All-American honors . His NFL career spanned 11 seasons in Baltimore, followed by short stints in Houston and New York before retiring after 2013 . He earned nine Pro Bowl selections, was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, won Super Bowl XLVII, and remains one of the all-time interception return leaders with two record-long returns and the most interception return yards .

Reed stepped into coaching in 2016 with the Buffalo Bills as an assistant defensive backs coach . In 2020, he accepted an advisory role—the chief of staff—for his alma mater, University of Miami. Most recently, Reed accepted and briefly held the head coaching position at Bethune-Cookman in 2023, an experience he described as both humbling and educational.

With Reed now at the helm, the Falcons roster could benefit greatly—particularly their new draft picks on defense. His ball-hawking reputation and secondary expertise might fast-track the development of promising rookies (LB Jalon Walker and S Xavier Watts) and infuse the team with the competitive edge he displayed throughout his career. Expect the defense—especially young corners and safeties—to embrace Reed’s instincts-driven, turnover-first philosophy immediately.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank is said to be excited about Reed’s hiring, viewing it as a bold leap toward redefining the team’s identity.
