Many had Sheduer Sanders going #1 in the draft. Surprisingly, that did not happen. Instead of going to Detroit, he would be drafted by the New York Giants. Sheduer and New York just go together. We expect some rookie woes so it’s way too soon to panic. But last night, he would get his welcome-to-the-league moment.
In the Giants’ loss to the Commanders, Sanders would throw for 342 yards, three interceptions, and zero touchdowns. He had some good flashes but made passes that had me scratching my head. Granted they went against a team that was #2 in the NFC last year. The Commanders, a division rival, made it as uncomfortable for Sanders as possible. But when watching the game, I feel it was Sanders’ bad habits being shown against smarter, stronger, and faster players. As in college, he tends to hold onto the ball too long and try to force a play that just isn’t there. In college though, he would take more sacks than throw interceptions. Last night, he would throw three interceptions trying to force plays but oddly take 0 sacks.
The schedule for the Giants is very tough this season. The next game is against the Coach Mari-led Denver Broncos. I don’t expect a breakout game from Sanders and I don’t think you should either. And that is ok. He is a rookie. Continue to pour into the young guy and he will grow into a superstar. We all want to see the swagger and performance that we have seen previously, but this is the pros. It will take time.
