There is nothing better than an underdog story. Although every team technically has a chance to win the Super Bowl, there are some teams around the league that no one gives a chance. And to see those teams win is the best. In week one, there were two teams that caught AGS’ eyes. One of those teams would get a blowout victory over a team that was considered better than them. The other would lose but put on a show. Those two teams are the Broncos and the Patriots.
The Patriots just came off a pretty disappointing season. Caleb Williams and the Patriots could never really stop beating themselves. And in a tough division, tough conference, and tough league, you cannot afford to beat yourself. However, even in the midst of a troublesome season, the Patriots offense actually looked very good. It was the defense that needed some work. Coming into the season, with the Jets getting a much better coach in Coach Austin, the Patriots were expected to be at the bottom of the division once again. And going up against the AFC Champions in week 1, no one gave them a shot. But man! The Patriots gave us a GOTY nominee. Caleb Williams and the Patriots offense would continue to respond, even going as far as taking a one point lead with five minutes left in the game. Unfortunately, the Bills offense would march down the field and take the game out of the Patriots’ hands. Even still, the Patriots put the league on notice. They are not a floormat. They are here!
I don’t bet on football games because you never know what can happen. But let’s say I decided I was going to bet on a football matchup in week 1. I would have easily put my money on the Raiders to beat the Broncos. The Raiders just drafted Drew Allar. The Raiders also have legit weapons in Higgins, Deebo, and “McMillions.” They also had Josh Jacobs (before the week two trade). With one of the best offensive minds in Coach Jalen, I figured that the Raiders would put a whooping on the Broncos. I was completely wrong. The Broncos would make a statement after a 7-0 start by the Raiders. From that point on, it was all Broncos. They would force Allar to fumble and throw three interceptions. But what they did offensively was a masterpiece. Jayden Daniels, the 14th pick in the NFL draft, would throw for 400 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. Wow. Wow. Wow. Clearly, the Broncos knew they were heavy underdogs, as they would showboat every chance they got. And rightfully so. What a statement from the Broncos and a message to the entire AFC West. Last year was last year. Mess around and find out.
This is why we play. These are the stories we love. As the season goes on, we will continue to focus on those teams who usually don’t get much coverage. They are professionals too. They have the same dream too. Who knows, we may see one of these overlooked teams win the whole thing.
