In 2016, there were some new kids on the block. Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot. The Dynamic Duo. The Cowboys, led by those two, would go 13-3 and be one of the best teams in the league. A lot of failed hate-watching was due to them. Great clutch passes from Dak and huge beast runs from Big Zeke. We know how that ended, but that is not the point of this article. The point is that Dak has found his Zeke. Yes. He has found his Zeke and he goes by Donovan Edwards.
In their Week 1 win against the 49ers, Donovan Edwards rushed 26 times for 208 yards and 4 touchdowns. An insane debut for a rookie running back. Those 208 yards tied him for the 14th most rushing yards in a debut, tying Terry Miller.
Dak Prescott would only need to throw 13 passes and 120 yards for the Cowboys to win. The defense also showed up when it mattered. The defensive line caused a lot of pressure. Micah Parsons would finish with 2 sacks. Patrick Payton, a rookie Left End from Florida State, would finish with a sack and an interception.
Back to Donovan, should we be worried though? I mean a beastly debut. He looked unstoppable because he was. But I’m getting Deja Vu. I have seen this story before. Twenty-six carries is a lot. For reference, Joe Mixon was averaging around twenty-five carries a game before his season-ending injury. I do think that we should keep an eye out for that because this could be too much to put on a rookie. Nonetheless, a great showing from the Cowboys.
It’s just one game but I am impressed. Ceedee Lamb didn’t even play this game due to violating NFL Team Policy, and the Cowboys still handled business in San Francisco. Next week, he will be available as the Cowboys travel to Green Bay to play the Packers.
